How to convert the .3D file to another step or other format to open it with solidworks?

I just received a .3d file from a customer but I can't open it with solidworks.

So I'm looking for a way to turn it into a step

Just for the record, are you sure of the extension.3D?

Have you tried to rename it to .3ds?

Why not ask him for a WWTP or STL? These are universal formats.
