I don't have Inventor on hand to test but maybe it is possible to create a part with a pattern following a sketch/trajectory, which you insert into your asm, on which you can base your pattern of components
In your assembly, create a new part and then create a sketch to serve as a path. Close the sketch edit. Create a surface that is perdendicular to the path. Create a rectangular network of this surface with your link settings. Exit part editing.
Place your first link and create a network by selecting the surface network. Inventor will place your parts following the surface network.
Don't forget to put your part as a ghost so that it is not visible in the room table in an MEP.
Edit: I really read across... That's what steph told you... Boulet inside...
Edit 2: you can make a network of points too, it's easier than with surfaces.
