How do I save a "hollow" model of an assembly or part?

How to save in a new file only the outer faces of an assembly or a part, i.e. to make a hollow model?

On which software? And what do  you call hollow?

Under Solidworks:

- For assemblies, save as Part (*.sldprt), geometry to save exterior faces.

- For the parts there is not the same option so possibility to put it in a front assembly and then even manip.

To complete @d.roger: in a room, you record a Step. You lose the functions of your tree and are left with only one body.
