I created/modified a part from the toolbox and then saved it under a new filename, inserted it into an assembly and then saved that assembly. When I reopen the assembly, I find myself with the unmodified part of the toolbox .

It's because it kept the link with the toolbox part,
There's a little piece of software hidden in c>Solidworks that removes the toolbox logo but keeps everything else. It is called "sldsefocprop.exe". Use it and replace your part in the assembly with the one you created. Look for it at home and if not I'll put you with it.... See links below:

Here is the path to the small software:
C:\Programs\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS\Toolbox\data utilities
For it to work, the room must not be open... Click Add Files and then Update Status and Turn and Played
