Hello
I try to compare/verify RDM exercises using the SolidWorks SIMULATION software.
Here's a compression exercise I'm testing:
A cast iron bar (E=100 GPa, V=0.3) supports a compressive load of 140 kN.
The bar is 200 mm long and 50 mm in diameter.
Determine the shortening of the length, then the increase in the Ø.
For the first question I found by hand -0.214 mm but with simulation, I have 0.14 mm!!
Does anyone have an explanation? Should we put the imposed travel differently?
Thank you
Hello
I find the same result as simulation using SmartDesign
The formulas used are displayed

lol, there's a mistake in SmartDesign! if it happens there are others...
In the formula:
Sr = σ / Rec

Factor of safety = Allowable elastic stress / Max stress .... No?

but the formula written on the right reads: Re
whereas it is Rec
we find 2.73 instead of 13.45

It's true you have to read Rec instead of Re for compression. It's a copy/paste error between the 2 worksheets, I think.
Thanks for the information
Otherwise 960/71.356= 13.454

Here is the statement:
The book: Guide de Mécanique de Jean-Louis FANCHON - NATHAN
This book is a reference but there is a small error because we have 0.14 calculated by hand...
+1 for Simulation and SmartDesign!!

A typo, a 2, it's slipped by mistake!

In a later version of the same book, the bug was fixed:

On the other hand, for the presentation I put:
4/5 can do better, letter sometimes difficult to recognize, writing a little "doctor"
lol ;-)
@olivier42: it was my quick draft, then I usually clean it up

Otherwise it's true that I have a very "personal" handwriting not always legible
