PDM Workgroup Vault Migration

Hello

How do I migrate the safe from a PDM Work with a solidwork 2005 to another workstation under Windows 7 with solidwork 2016

Hello

The procedure is not that simple.

Will the service and data run on a computer with Windows 7? Isn't it a server?

Is the data on a NAS or directly on the computer?

The files are all in 2005 version or all in 2016 or a mix of the 2?

To migrate:

Install the software on the new server.

Stop the service on the old server.

Make a backup copy of the data.

Copy the data to the new server.

Launch the service on the new server by pointing to where the data is for reconstruction.

This last step can take more than a day depending on the size of the trunk.

When connecting from the client workstations, point to the new server.

Edit: if you are under maintenance (which is usually the case if you have the 2016 version), I advise you to get closer to your reseller who has formalized procedures.

Edit 2: SolidWorks 2018 will no longer support PDM Workgroup, and since SolidWorks 2016, there is a new software called standard PDM that is included in the PRO version of SolidWorks, like WorkGroup.

Maybe ask your reseller how much it would cost to migrate to the latter knowing that Workgroup will soon die (well in 2 years).

It's still crazy to make the file archiving system die... to replace it with another where recovery is complex and tedious...

What do you mean by "recovery is complex and tedious"?

Are you talking about migrating from one system to another?

Our resellers had warned us several years ago (4 or 5 years ago), telling us that WorkGroup was going to die soon. So we had been warned!

And nothing prevents you from staying in the 2017 version for another 2 years and a few after its release, so until 2020 (the SP5 will be released in October 2017).

Hello PL,

I'm also interested in this topic because we use PDM Works and we now know that the SW 2018 versions won't support it. So we contacted Axemble our reseller who sent us a slide (in attachment)

Our current situation:

6 SW 2016 licenses

4 PDM Works Contributors (3 local)  (1 in VPN for subsidiaries abroad, the contributor is placed on the server or is the vault and they point to it via the VPN)

Size of the volume of files archived in the vault: 17Gb, and not everything is in it, we should still put some.

DEll Poweredge R630 Server, Intel xeon 1.66 GH, 8 GB ram

According to our interlocutors, the future PDM Standard cannot be used because:

(At this level, it's not clear), on the slide they say that the PDM STD can handle a 300 Gb < chest, and further on we can read SQL Express server: 10 Gb of data maximum.

We are more than 5 users

The RAM on SQL Express is 1Gb and that would be too small for the 6 users that we are.

The conclusion is therefore to switch to PDM PRO!

It's not the same budget and I'd like an enlightened opinion on the subject?

Thank you in advance.
