Hello, I need to migrate directly from solidworks 2018 to solidworks 2024. What do you recommend? Do I uninstall solidworks 2018 and then install 2024, or do I install 2024 directly on workstations that already have 2018: there will then be the 2 versions on the same workstation?
Hello and welcome alain.neel, I hope we can help you find a solution. For my part I'm not a great specialist, but you always have to wait for the minimum SW SP4 version, to have as little bugging as possible... Please note that when upgrading to the next version, it will no longer be possible to re-open the 2024 versions (files) with the 2018=> version https://www.visiativ.com/actualites/trucs-astuces/probleme-version-future-solidworks-3-solutions-pour-ouvrir-votre-fichier/ Good luck. @+. AR.
The Sp5 of the 2024 has just been released. I advise an uninstall and then reinstall to start from something clean. Redo the document templates in 2024 version. And start from a new profile (importing a profile from an old version creates a lot of bugs)
Hello The best thing to do is to have only one active version (less risk of conflict or error) unless you really need to keep the lower version. On the other hand, test the version on old files to make sure that the conversion will go well (skipping 6 versions we have already done it, it didn't happen without rework)
Make backups of all your 3D components in version 2018 (ZIP Archive).
Go through everything you would like to keep (mechanically welded profiles, Personalized BOMs, Annotations, Tables, Appearances, Symbols... basically everything that is customizable) and make backups of it.
Double-check point number 2 (we always forget things.)
Take screenshots of all the settings of Solidworks 2018 (You will save time when reconfiguring the new version)
Save Your Solidworks Settings and Settings (Even If You Shouldn't Use Them)
IMPORTANT: Remember to " release your Solidworks license" (keep its Serial Number in a corner).
Uninstall Solidworks 2018. (And its related tools if you have any).
Delete all traces of " Solidworks " from your PC by hand (Program files, registry (if you can), Data/User/...
Install the New Version of Solidworks.
Activate your license by reusing the serial number from the old version.
Redo all your settings in Solidworks Options.
Recreate a new model for all your documents (parts, assemblies, drawings,...).
Only good advice. What a shame (to be polite) that there isn't a built-in SW migration tool to do all these tasks... Well, if DS didn't develop it, it's probably because it wouldn't be useful to anyone.
