Hello, is it possible to edit SolidWorks without being a work laptop administrator?
Let me explain, I work in a company where I have to constantly ask network managers to change my solidworks with their administrator password, and he doesn't know anything about it. Being new to this company, I'm the only one under Solidworks, so I had to set up the directory, library etc... As every time I make changes, I always have to go through them to put their... password and sometimes I can wait up to 2 days. At that point, if you're like me, I can't sit still anymore and the pressure mounts.
It's the same as when you're riding a bike and everything is fine, a person comes and puts a stick in the front wheel, nasty dive!
Would there be a person who would know how to solve the situation.
thank you and have a good day a cousin from Quebec

Hello @pmorency_3
There are several problems or possibilities of an answer in what you say!
1°) You say network which may imply that the management of files is remote - Question use of EPDM O/N
2°) when you say modify my solidworks. Question what do you want to change to have SW ask you to be in admin mode.
3°) also look at windows if you are forced to type a password it would be good if you had an Admin password. As a result, from the windows point of view, you are still administrators.
4° ) from the SW point of view what are all the cases where you need to be an admin.
This will guide the members of this forum to give you solutions
For example, recently, I had this problem with the sheets and background. All I had to do was move all the files to a directory of mine (not modifiable at each version change) outside the spaces provided by SW so that I no longer have to go into admin mode to simply make a backup of a basemap.
5°) what I forgot to ask you but that you can add ;-).
Kind regards

Hello
I agree with @zozo_mp on the fact of looking on the Windows side.
If I understand correctly, SW is installed on your computer. And if you are the only one to use it, you should ask your IT department to grant you admin rights on the server folders where the different SW shared folders will be saved (if there are any... e.g. background, library...).
The other point to clarify: are you an administrator of your position? If this is not the case, it can cause inconvenience (password request among others) if you try to install/uninstall software.
In another screw, there were several of us using SW. All the common files (library, background, templates of all kinds...) were on the server and each SW user had read/write access to these folders.
I think that making a complete point with your IT department in order to define your needs for access to certain resources could take a little time but you will be autonomous afterwards, no need to wait for the password!
I've had to deal with this kind of situation in the past and it's not always easy to reconcile the fluidity of work and the IT security of a company.
Kind regards.

Thank you for your good advice!
I too in another life worked this way, as did most places it works this way. but now I'm the only one under SW
My company, don't want to give admin rights anymore, because I learned yesterday that last year, we were victims by hackers, they reviewed all the security.
After writing the question on the forum, I did some research on the net and I learned some things about my problem, I decided to do a test and it works.
You have to repatriate all on the c : library, background, models of all kinds... , borrow a license for a local work, then make a pack and go in the appropriate folder of the project.
1- The problem of slowness is no longer there!
2- I click 2 times on l X to enter the famous admin password and it works sw keeps all the references. Since it is installed on my workstation
In short, I think I'm going to give up working this way.
Thank you very much, you have enlightened me on certain points.
by the way it's -22 with the wind felt of -41 this morning here! as we say in good Quebecers ''IL FAIT FRETTE'' thank you you're nice

for your summary: It's better to be resigned than terminated ;-)
Well on this side of the sea it's what we prefer in general.
Kind regards
Hi all
Glad to read that you managed to solve your problems.
I have the impression that very often we pay the price of computer scientists who are not interested in our work tool and wrongly consider it as a " banal " software like Word, and this concern is very little about the impact that their actions can have (right, server modification...) on our work tool (even worse with EPDM).
So I'm taking advantage of this topic to submit a question to our friends at Visiativ and @Coralie to find out if there wouldn't be a presentation of SolidWorks and EPDM for computer scientists.

Hi all
I don't know if the problem is that computer scientists consider that SW is a software like any other or that SW does not behave like standard software by trying to use normally protected resources (when you read SW's recommendations to reduce the standard protection of Windows, it is enough to make anyone who is a little sensitive to security scream).

Obviously there is confusion in the notion of "modify Solidworks".
It's more of a configuration and if you have access to a network, I would recommend that you leave your files there to benefit from a regular backup.
One question that needs to be clarified is whether the IT is managed by an external company or an internal department. In all cases, there must be an internal referent. I recommend that you make him read this page: https://www.visiativ-solutions.fr/configuration-station-travail-solidworks/, especially the "system settings" part.

Hello and thank you for your advice.
Finally my problem is solved, by dint of arguing and complaining, they gave me the rights so that I can at least use my work tool without hassle, for the rest I don't care! No more sticking in the wheels.
Thank you again and look forward to
