Hello
I'm trying to simulate the phenomenon of flutter in Solidworks. For those who don't know, here is a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQI3AWpTWhM. More precisely, flutter is an aeroelastic instability resulting from a coupling of bending and twisting movements (even if the bending movement seems to be preponderant) beyond a critical speed. I have Solidworks 2014 with the Simulation and Flow Simulation modules. I should point out that I am quite new to the subject, having never used such modules. I have created my 3D wing profile on which I want to run the simulation. I would like to subject it to an air flow whose speed would be variable and observe the response of the wing (bending and twisting movements). I scoured the net but I didn't really find any real information for my study. Does anyone know how to do it or does they know a corresponding tutorial?
Thank you in advance.
Hi @ hugolagaze
I'm not convinced that you can study flutter in solidworks
First of all, you don't know the simulations and flow simulation modules well
+ to know what type of SW you have standard, pro, premium
If you look via the categories you don't have the same possibilities via the versions
which of + is there are also specific complements to the simulation
See this page
http://www.alliativ.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf/SW_CAO_Matrice.pdf
now you can make your wings resonate via a frequency
This frequency can be caused via the pressure and speed of the air
I'd like to follow you in your project, have details and see where it's blocked
@+ ;-)
Good evening
I am not a specialist in the dynamics of structures but I have some notions through my training.
Maybe you could start by studying your own ways of winging, after all isn't flutter just a resonance phenomenon?
You can do this analytically by modeling with simple shapes, and much more complex with software such as Adams... After solidworks is also capable of it, at least I tried a very simple element of beam under 2013 with convincing results some time ago...
Hoping to have given you some leads.
Kind regards
Thomas
Good evening
Just a copy and paste of an invitation:
[To discover the numerical simulation capabilities of COMSOL Multiphysics version 4.4, I remind you of our next free training!
See you on Friday 06 June at the Research Centre of the Ecole des Mines in Douai from 09:30.
Details and registration at: http://www.comsol.fr/events/mmw/28539/
Training program:
09:30 - 10:30 / Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics
10:30 am - 12:30 pm / Computer workshop: getting started with the software
Each participant will receive a trial version of COMSOL Multiphysics. Please note that the number of places is limited.
Thank you for passing this message on to your colleagues.
Sincerely,]
Given the mathematical models used at COMSOL, I think their software is capable of dealing with this phenomenon of fluttering.
Kind regards
MC
First, I want to thank you for responding.
To answer gt22 : I have the Premium version of Solidworks 2014, I have some knowledge about Simulation but absolutely none about Flow Simulation.
"Now you can make your wings resonate via a frequency
This frequency can be caused via the pressure and speed of the air"
You mean: do a frequency analysis, like on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSF4SUKChzk ? Or do a static study, by adding an external charge created by a pressurized fluid (Pressure)?
Can you elaborate?
To answer thomas.guillard : flutter is indeed a phenomenon of resonance of the wing that occurs when the torsion and bending frequencies come together for a given wind speed. I prefer to do the study in Solidworks since I already have it and I use this software in class (even if I don't master the simulation modules very well). I have already done a study of the natural frequencies of the wing via frequency analysis in Simulation. But what I would like to do is subject the kite to a variable speed airflow and observe the response of the wing, including the frequencies of the bending and twisting movements.
A caronmaxime : I'm going to take a look at this software but as I said before, it would be convenient for me to stay under Solidworks. Also, are there any tutorials from COMSOL Multiphysics to create a 3D wing profile and proceed with the flutter study?
