simple question, can we convert a solidworks assembly to a DWF file

Yes, you must first register your assembly as a part by saving as, and choose the sldprt format.

 

Then register under dxf, or dwg

Sorry, I understood Dxf and not Dwf.

but it's in  DWF and not DWG

There are plenty of free dxf to dwf converters. so my answer can work in part:p ^^
