Is it in a large assembly?
This has happened to us before. We managed to open it by opening sub-set by sub-set and then the MEP.

Assembly of 105 parts. It's not the first time this has happened to me.

It works with the opening of each sub-assembly and then the MEP.
Could it be due to a temporary loss of access paths to the various parts of the assembly?

For the cause, I don't think it comes from loss of ties. More like memory. Because you load the pc less by opening the sub-assemblies beforehand.
On the other hand, what is your configuration because it happens to us with 500 or even 1000 parts...
