SW2020 Testing the Balance of an Assembly

I am a teacher and I am working on a project to design a phone holder with 5th grade students.
I want my students to modify the medium and be able to test that it does not tip. But I don't know how to do it.
How can I test whether or not the phone  holder will tilt forward when we put the phone down?
- 3 files: telephone; telephone supoort in sheet metal ; and the assembly of the 2 elements
- Solidworks 2020

Hello

Activate the "center of gravity" function, now called center of mass.       Tools ==> command ==> reference tool ==> center of mass

Then either by displaying a permanent drawing or by using the evaluate function which gives you the precise dimensions in all the DDLs

Knowing that you can have the CG of each element and/or the CG of the complete asm.  SW gives the CG of a volume whether it is sheet metal, aluminum block, or mechanically welded, etc ....

 

Then just look at how the CG is positioned according to the angle of inclination either of the object or of the assembly (ASM)

PS: One of our colleagues had posted all the possible cases of displaying the centers of mass with their meaning (a nice guy but I don't remember who)  ;-)

Thank you, I couldn't get the center of gravity displayed, now it's all good.
It is not possible to have a visual of the fall of the object though? It would be more meaningful for my 5th grade.

The switch is possible with "motion" but it remains quite complicated.

In addition, you need to have the exact center of gravity of the phone, which is just represented here. This may be enough if you consider that the center of gravity + weight is almost correct.

Otherwise, for the tilting, the center of gravity of the support alone is already limited (1) because it is almost at the limit of the lower part of the sheet metal, if this center of gravity were centered in relation to the base, it would be much more correct.

In addition, with the telephone, the center of gravity comes out of the support sheet in the lower part (the part resting on the table).

Recommendations:

Either lengthen the sheet metal in 3 or move the phone to the top towards the steering (4) in order to have the center of gravity centered in relation to the middle of the bottom (part resting on the table)

From a purely sheet metal point of view, the fold close to 2 can be complicated to make (depending on the bending mode- Bending machine?)

EDIT: The large folding radius in the lower part does not really help with the stability of the foot (surface in contact with the table, still reduced)

Thank you for all  the ways to improve. I found this tutorial for motion, I'll try the thing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhyet8WylBs&ab_channel=GoEngineer  Around the 7th minute)

The support is very unbalanced on purpose so that it jumps out at the students and that it corrects the pb: lengthen in 3. But I'm actually going to change because I'm mixing 2 bps: first ask to balance the support alone and then the support with the phone is much better.

Manufacturing: 3D printer that allows all kinds of fantasies!

I can't reproduce the movement study like in the video, if someone can I don't see what I'm not doing.

The "table" part is missing (to send a complete assembly it is better to make a pack and go in pack and go file and check flatten into a single folder and check save in a zip.

Unverifiable balance in the state.

After pressing calculate (see attached screenshot), we realize that the table is too small, the phone and the support topples normally, then falls off the table.

Enlarging the table in length especially, but otherwise, then it's functional.

Preview after enlarging the table see the result on the attached screenshot.

Tip: go back to the beginning to review the 1st images.

Thank you bcp, indeed it works, I don't know what I wasn't doing (the yellow lines didn't appear) but now it's ok even if I'm struggling a little to get there on other edits. Thank you.
