Extremely long loading times for each operation

Hello

I have very long loading times for each operation (saving, changing constraints, updating, opening part etc.) in my assembly with 3 sub-assemblies.

- No slowdown when I rotate my assemblies in space, very long loading times are only during "operations"

- I work on Soliworks assemblies from STEP files generated by the TOPSOLID software.

- PC: 4 cores at 3.6GHz, 8 GB RAM, good video card. Same problem on other PCs. It's also slow on weaker PCs.

- I tried to restart the pc to clear the cache but it doesn't change anything.

- I have put my subsets in light but it is still slow. Example: but changing a constraint  takes about 60s

- I put my subassemblies in speed pak and activate the config in my general assembly but it's still slow. Example: about 60s to save.

-  One of my 3 sub-assemblies was made with solidworks and despite its large number of parts (about 800), there is absolutely no slowdown...

It seems that the problem comes from the large assemblies from STEP files made by TOPSOLID. However, I have already worked in another company in this type of configuration and once the STEP file is converted into a soliworks assembly, no more problem. However, the PCs were a little less efficient and the assemblies more substantial...

Any ideas?

Thank you very much for your help

Hello

Is it possible to test on another workstation to see if the problem occurs too?

Otherwise, we can try to reset the settings to zero to see if it changes anything, see my tutorial:

http://www.lynkoa.com/tutos/3d/reinitialiser-les-parametres-solidworks

Is it a recent problem or has it always been like this?

Yes, I tested it on another workstation. At first it looked better but after a few minutes it was still the same problem.... I have just arrived at this company.

What version of SolidWorks is installed? Is this the latest Service Pack?

For the 2014 it's the SP5:

Have you tried to see if your parts from the STEP are "clean"? Without discontinuities, without errors, etc.

It happens to me from time to time and I know that it can come from that

You would have to enter each room, right-click in the construction tree and select the diagnostic thing (a red cross in a suitcase I think).

On the other hand, good luck to fix everything. Sometimes you spend more time on it than you should

Yes I'm good in 2014 SP5.0

And yes the parts are clean, only 2 parts had surface problems and I corrected them...

Other ideas? In your opinion in IGES instead of step?
I tried the X_T but it doesn't change anything and in addition my pieces are scattered in space.

A clue to see which parts take the longest to rebuild, to target if there are any problems:

The reconstruction report tells me times of less than 0.04s...

Whereas here I just wanted to add a constraint and it takes about 1 min...

Hello

Can you run AssemblyXpert from the Tools menu of your assembly and copy/paste the content of the report here, we might be able to see if something is "shocking" in your asm.

Report of the S-Ens SldW from the Topsolid Step (the one that rows the most)

This list indicates the time it took to rebuild components during the last assembly rebuild. Negligible elements are omitted, while a second reconstruction may be necessary for those with complex relationships.

Was the problem already there before July? If not, see to uninstall the KB windows that is causing the problem:

Hello

Please check if the Microsoft KB3072630 is installed from Windows Update, like this:

  1. To open Windows Update, click the Start button .Image du bouton Démarrer In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
  2. In the left pane, click View update history.

If so, you should uninstall it by following this tutorial:

http://www.mycadblog.fr/problemes-solidworks-rencontres-apres-la-mise-a-jour-de-microsoft/

If it doesn't work, you can reset the SolidWorks settings (which you can restore later) to determine if it comes from the configuration of the workstation: http://www.lynkoa.com/tutos/3d/reinitialiser-les-parametres-solidworks

Are any of the files on a network drive? Does making a composition to take away locally (just to test) change anything?

To try to improve performance, see this interesting message:

Some things I found in SW performance testing that improves SW performance and reliability:

Change Windows System Properties -
     - Advanced>Visual Effects set to "Adjust for best performance" then select 'smooth edges of screen fonts'
     - Advanced>Advanced>Virtual Memory uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" and select "Custom size" and enter the "Initial size" to the "Recommended" value listed and the 'Maximum size' value to 'Initial value + 5120MB' (need to Restart computer now)
     - "Control Panel>Power Options" select 'Change plan settings' for the active selected plan. On next window, select 'Change advanced power settings'. In popup window, scroll down to "Processor Power Management" and change theMIN value to 100%. If this is not set to 100%, you will not use full processor capability nor allow processor to switch into Turbo mode.

Hardware considerations -
     - For all SW w/data manager, there is pinging between SW & data manager going on all the time in order to maintain related version notices & defined relationship & those being defined, which become a significant overhead to SW's ability to respond to user as the solid model get larger. If you can open the part/assys you need to work on & the disconnect from data manager while you do you work then reconnect to check-in & save your work, things go much faster.
     - SW was not making use of the graphics processor units(GPUs) to do the graphic manipulation, until 2014, so SW was taxing the local processor & memory for any graphical activity. SW 2015 makes even better use of the graphics processor units(GPUs) of card like K2200/K4200, so graphics are much more responsive.
     - Also since SW is single threaded(only can use 1 core), if you have a processor that has more than 4 cores, you should disable the extra cores, in the BIOS, and the processor clock-rate will go up & improve SW performance. Faster the clock-rate the better.
     - Also having a local SSD or SSHD(hybrid) drive will help performance, unless your SW is connected to a data manage, then they are of no benefit.

Even with all the changes, I am still seeing a periodic hang, between SW task/request, but things are better.

Forgot to mention that once you change the "Advanced>Visual Effects set to "Adjust for best performance" then select 'smooth edges of screen fonts'", you need to go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization" and select an 'AERO Theme' in order for SW to work properly with Windows.

Thank you very much for your help!

But I have just arrived in the company so I could not answer you if the problem was there in July. From what I could understand, my predecessor worked on topsolid and not from a step so he didn't have a problem.

I only work locally so a priori nothing to do with the network.

Regarding the visual effects and graphics, I don't think it comes from there because "graphically" everything goes very well. Despite the large number of parts (a little more than 1000) the pieces rotate very fluidly in space when I manipulate the sets.

The cuts/section go surprisingly well too.

I've already tried to reset the soliworks settings but it didn't change anything.

I really think that it comes from the files from the STEP. They must have been generated in some way.
Or solidworks loads them in a certain way that is problematic.

Because everything else works well and when I open a complex assembly that has been made with solidworks everything goes very well.

After disabling the "Solidworks enterprise PDM" add-in. Is it much better!!
The loading time of the "Supplement" window is also abnormally long (5 to 10 seconds) while I have just opened solidworks and I have no file open....

Thank you for your help

Hello

I bounce back on PL's message about performance:

I tried to follow the explanations but I'm really not up to speed in English and it's complicated to find your way around with a windows in French... Would anyone be able to translate this message?

Thank you.
