The assembly must be laid out before it can be done. Direct export from the ASM is not possible.

Yes, just create the drawing and "save as" it in DXF format.

As it says, you can create a blank drawing and save as and you change the format to .dxf.
The only problem with this method is that you lose the origin of your piece, the dxf will take as its origin the lower left corner of a classic A4 drawing for example.
A simple way to reposition the origin of your assembly is to use DWGeditor.
