Tips to save time in modeling

Hi all.

In addition to the different modeling techniques that save us a lot of time, I have noticed in my company that depending on the person, different working methods (100% mouse or other work habits) can increase productivity.

For my part, I combine mouse work with a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and I start using the mouse movement settings...

And you, what are your daily tips to help you gain in productivity?

Hello

I recommend my beginner SolidWorks tips tutorial:

Otherwise, for the design or modeling itself, there is the schematic representation, little known and quite practical:

Hello

It also depends on whether you are working with a standard mouse or a CAD mouse

Hello

First of all, yes, I'm a loyal supporter of mouse + keyboard work (shortcuts).

In addition, the SW selection bubble (right-click) is, once properly configured, extremely fast to launch a function that comes up often.

The 2 coupled solutions (key functions in mouse shortcut + additional functions in keyboard shortcuts) =  I almost don't render in the function selection tabs anymore.

Everyone has their own style and way but I remain convinced that even someone who knows tabs by heart will take longer to work than a person who masters his shortcuts.

Under Autocad, for example, I worked in 100% keyboard shortcuts and you could clearly see the difference between my colleague (100% mouse) and me in terms of speed.

So, to sum up, I'm 100% with the configurable shortcuts as they are.

Something useful that I also specify in my guide is the use of the S key totally customizable according to the context (different customization between sketch, part, assembly and drawing):

A video is available here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyO6J-KECzI

For my part:

100% "mouse" of the right hand and for the left hand (keyboard to tuck in the ribs) and "space mouse" for all movements:

http://www.3dconnexion.fr/buy/shop.html?3dxcp=GA_GA_search_google_FR_Brand

The space mouse avoids zooming with roulette (which will end up making our hands and fingers all deformed like "E.T").

Space mouse rotations and zooms are faster and much more precise.

Depending on the model you can set buttons to activate functions (it replaces the keyboard shortcut keys).

The space mouse takes you 1 week to get used to it (but you have to force yourself, it's not necessarily natural at first) and then you can't do without it.........................

And for the question of general speed, I set up a few macros at the BE:

"Save-as", when starting from an existing design (both a part and an assembly) which saves the 3D and the corresponding drawing and updates the custom properties (code, name, and if necessary customer, deal number, etc...): you just have to fill in the new properties for the macro to do its job (time saving: from 1 min to 10 seconds).

http://www.lynkoa.com/tutos/3d/macro-enregistrer-sous-avec-solidworks

I also made two other macros that I used regularly:

Save as PDF and DWG:

Allows in one click to save and file in the right place on the server the plans in PDF and DWG format, and directly notify the ERP (CAPM) of the presence of the files so that the information is present and various verifications (property code corresponds to the name of the file, file well archived in the safe, and others ...)

De-protection of  library files:

Our library is on the network and read-only. A small macro allows you to get the write read (rather than finding the file on the network, change the properties to remove the read-only file, then reload the file as a write read in SolidWorks) and vice versa when you are finished.

Hello

For my part, it's mouse + "s" key + "enter" key to recall my last command and I set up some very useful keyboard shortcuts like the "i" to Isolate rooms.

With this and the right mouse click, I think I'll do 90% of my actions, the remaining 10% I go to the menus.

The problem with these mice is that you have to dare to take the plunge! For my part, I haven't taken the plunge yet^^

Thank you all for these quick feedbacks...

I realize that the techniques used to save time are quite varied.

I hope to be able to set up different techniques that can suit all the people in the design office where I am implementing 3D (we are moving from autocad 2D to SW).

I'm also expecting a lot of macros, I'm going to do a basic training and an advanced training in February. And I hope to make life easier for a lot of people by setting macros.

As far as the space mouse  is concerned, I'd be curious to test....

Re Hello,

Personally I managed to get offered 2 space Pro drivers (I managed to update the information and references within the company in which I work)

Don't ask for an email at 3dconnexion they can even lend you to try the different models.

Hello!

Quick question, I'm training with the space mouse pro. I'm going to rotate it in the office so that colleagues can see what they think.

On the other hand I don't know how to save the settings in order to recover them on their computer?

Do you know how to do it?

Thank you in advance
