How to make an imitation "stone" part in solidworks?

Hello

I would like to make a 3D printed piece, with on the top side many small reliefs, imitating a rocky surface. I want this to be well embossed and not just an appearance or texture that I'll put on my piece. And of course I'm not going to have fun drawing each relief with extrusions or smoothings.

Who would have an idea of how to proceed please?

Thank you in advance.

Carolina

Hello

Look under these appearances that have relief.

Stone look ok

but what kind of stone

a 3D scan is I think the best walkthrough

You can also create a distorted surface

but there's a Max of work

especially what is the purpose of a complete wall or stone/stone

Hello Caroline,

In your case you have to use so-called "modo" appearances that you will find on the Luxology website

http://help.solidworks.com/2013/French/WhatsNew/c_wn_accessing_luxology_appearances.htm?id=3746d3e02e784ea8a3ea3cdc7621a643

Having done some tests, it's quite impressive in terms of textures! but you need a machine that runs behind it! Example here I just drew a parallelepiped:

You will find what you are looking for here:

On the other hand, these are appearances, renderings and not geometry per se. If your piece is a sphere, your printable file will be a perfect sphere. I don't think there is a bridge between textured appearance and mesh for 3D printing...

Hi @ icome

it's relief that doesn't ask for an appearance it seems to me when reading the thread

otherwise for appearances I fully agree with you ;-)

Hello

I doubt it will help you, but a tool to create reliefs from a texture is planned in the 2019 version I think.

Hello

I confirm what Pierre S says, on the other hand it is a 2019 specificity that obviously does not exist in version 2008 or lower.

On the other hand, combined with the mapping with the Modo or Visualize appearances, you can do what you are looking for
