Error read/write file. STEP

Hello to you,

I've been aware of this problem for some time, but today the need to share a file between 2 software programs forces me to try to solve it.

I am currently on SolidWorks 2016 SP5 with other workstations in my company, and we can no longer create or open STEP files.

When opening a file of this type, the following messages appear:

"The default templates are not valid. The problem can be resolved by correcting the default templates in the Options dialog box. Do you want to continue with an empty model?"

-> OK

"The default templates are not valid. The problem can be resolved by correcting the default templates in the Options dialog box. Do you want to continue with an empty model?"

-> OK

Except that here it is:

-When it's a file from our home nothing appears, and the design tree is empty. No catch-up possible. The same goes for the IGS which don't even open.

- For imported files such as GrabCAD / TracePart some bodies may be displayed, a design tree is then available with effectively repair options. But nothing helps, the lost surfaces are irretrievable.

My workstation as well as another one are affected, unable to create/read WWTPs.

There you go, if I need to provide additional info to help solve this problem don't hesitate.

Thank you in advance for your help gentlemen/ladies,

Maury Félix

Hello

This has happened to us before.

Try to create new part models and assemblies on your desk for example. Then add the link to this folder in the SW Options and then File Locations.

Opens a .step file.

Hello

As the message indicates, you have to go to the options and indicate the path of the default template documents!

Hello and thank you for your advice,

As for Remrem's answer, I didn't understand it very well:

New parts models? Isn't it the same as coins?

For Coyote's answer I found the way and it leads to two templates:

- C / ProgramData / Solidworks2016 / templates (this seems to be the default file, which opened the STEP for me at first. Why did it become corrupted?)

-C / ProgramFiles / SolidworksCorp / Solidworks / lang / english / Tutorial

I'm willing to try to fix these templates or create new ones, but I'm very new to it.

EDIT: at the same time as I wrote this message I opened a new room, "saved as" Part Template...

My options are well calibrated to go for it, I tried again once more, still nothing.

Since apparently it's not done. You have to create a part model, and assembly model.

To do this, open a coin and asm then you save as .prtdot and .asmdot. This allows you to configure for example the units, or other properties of the document so that you don't have to redo them. Whenever you create a part or assembly this model is used.

Then you have to put it on a share folder so that each of the users has access to it. Then on each post you show the way.

Hello

Go to Tools, Options, Default Templates.

In front of Assembly, part and drawing, you click on the ... and you select a default template by double clicking.

Then you validate the options and your file should open.

This happens when the default model location is no longer valid (for example, when it points to a location in an older version of SOLIDWORKS.

Precisely yes, I have a lot of templates. If I didn't agree with any...

So I don't really understand why Solidworks doesn't want to open a STEP.

Thank you Mick!
It's resolved.

I think that all the answers given were concordant to repair the template paths but it's with you that I got it.

Thank you to everyone for your time and kindness.

Re

Can you give us one of your steps to see if OK on our workstations?

The problem is not related to the number of models we have on the station.

The problem is that in order to open a non-native file, SOLIDWORKS must generate parts and assemblies automatically. It is therefore necessary to specify which template to use to generate the different files.

Often, after installing a new version of SOLIDWORKS, the default template path is no longer correct because SOLIDWORKS has kept the settings of the old version which also includes file locations, if the location no longer exists on the computer, for example a SOLIDWORKS 2016 installation folder while you are in 2017, then we come across this problem.

That's why we click on the ... to re-select a default template from those defined in the file locations.

The problem you encounter is neither really related to the file nor the workstation, but simply to the settings which are not up to date.

Have a nice day

Mick

Of course.

But there's no reason why it shouldn't work now.

Thanks again,

Félix
