Hello
I'm looking for a reliable way to assign colors to components or faces within a machine assembly, if possible without modifying said components.
I thought I had found a good method, but the affected colors disappeared when I reopened my assembly the next day (on the assembly and its drawing).
I think one of the problems is the presence of sub-assemblies within my main assembly. Is it possible to assign colors to faces or components of a subassembly (and not to the complete subassembly)?
Thanks in advance!
Hello
I refer you to the SolidWorks Help here: Working with Skins - 2026 - SOLIDWORKS Design Help

If you want to have specific appearances at the level of component faces in an assembly, then you need to plan the corresponding display states in the components. Otherwise, if you change the appearance of a face of a part in the assembly in an assembly,
- Either the part is writable and you then change the appearance of the face at the level of the part file
- Either the part is read-only and in this case, the applied appearance will not be saved.
