PDM installation, various questions

Hello everyone!

I am the IT administrator of a small company, in which 2 people use Solidwork, but I don't know anything about it.

I was asked to install a physical server for solidwork PDM.

Since I like to know what's on my servers, I decided to do the PDM installation myself (however the management will be done by one of the users, who will follow a pdm training).

So I have a few questions:

1) While inquiring about the server's conf, I came across this post: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/201115

I had already planned to put the vault(s) on a separate disk, is it useful to separate the rest as well, like in the post?

I have 2 disks, C:/ for the system and D:/ for the vault, if necessary I can partition the C into 3, a system partition, one for SQL databases, and one for SQL logs and temporary files.

if that's what you have to do, how do you set up SQL to separate the components, and change the default path used when creating a new vault? (so I set it once and for all, and then the user in charge of creating/administering PDM does his cooking, I just have to make sure that the default locations are saved)

for SQL databases I think I have the answer there (https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/217762), and for the PDM vault apparently it's done during the installation (in the installer options), but for logs/time files?

2) Regarding licenses, I have trouble understanding the solidwork system.

For the moment, our 2 users have "standalone" licenses I think, Solidwork 2018 Premium.

If I understood correctly, Solidwork Premium includes standard PDM, right? And to get the serial number to install PDM, I have to contact our license provider (visiativ), right?

3) subsidiary question, concerning the network: if I understood correctly, PDM stores the data, but each user has a local copy of the vault, so when he works it is locally, and it is only when solidwork is closed (or when he saves his work?) that the changes are propagated on the server? So it's no longer useful to save the workstations (at least for the solidwork part)?

thank you in advance for your answers, and sorry for the cobblestone:)

A few elements for point n°3.
2 possibilities:
- the workload allows you to complete tasks during the day: no need to save the stations;
- the load is greater, users will not be able to transfer to the server (unless a temporary storage operation is possible): the stations must be backed up.

Hello

1- Bag how much space you used for current data and triple it in advance: 600GB and I have a space of 3 TB of data that allows me to see the future

The power of the machine is important and don't skimp on the ram

2- Network licenses are assigned to a server on which the application that manages the licenses is installed

No license management for standalones see with Visiativ to transform them if necessary.

3- PDM is archiving, so the user checks out what puts a copy in its local location. As long as it doesn't archive the changes, it remains local.

I strongly advise you to get Visiativ assistance to set up your PDM because it can be a wonderful tool or the worst of all if it is poorly configured

Ok, I'll see directly with the visiativ support, thank you.
