Removing 2D Drawings in Sheet Metal Working: Your Model-Based Definition Tips

In order to remain competitive in the face of subcontracting, and to keep our production in-house, we need to reduce our design times, I am currently working on an overhaul of the connectivity between our Design Office (BE) and our sheet metal workshop.

My goal is to modernize our workflow.

Here are the points on which I would like to move forward and have your opinions:

  1. Integration of a global CAM software: investment in a Trumpf TruTops Boost type tool to program the laser and bending machine, an animation of the bending will be directly visible on the machine screen.

  2. Removal of 2D detail plans and integration of a PDM:
    The bent sheet metal parts will be
    managed directly by the CAM software.
    We will keep the classic drawings only for the exceptions (parts with specific machining or very precise geometric tolerances).

To keep a history for each file and item, a pdm will be set up.

  1. 3D quality control in the workshop:

Having a folding animation on the CNC is good for the operator, but it's not enough to guarantee our quality standards.

To replace the paper plan, I want to set up terminals in the workshop with a 3D viewer (eDrawings type or equivalent) allowing the operator to handle the part, take his control dimensions and make the direct link with the design office.

My questions:

Have any of you already taken the "paperless " (or Model-Based Definition) step between the design office and the sheet metal work?

What is your feedback on this type of flow (especially with TruTops Boost)?

What are the pitfalls to avoid during implementation (computer equipment in the workshop, change management, tolerance management)?

I am interested in all your opinions and feedback to help me consolidate this project.

This is only at the project stage and the idea must mature
