Sorting an assembly by material

Hi all

On solidworks 2017, I have a complex assembly with a lot of parts and under assembly.

I have to export this main assembly as a "sub-assembly". That is to say a file with all the stainless steel parts, a file with all the HDPE parts, a POM part file ....

Is there a function or method for sorting the parts of an assembly by material?

Thank you

Bill of Materials - Sort

To sort the columns of a BOM:

  1. Right-click anywhere in the BOM and select Sort.

  2. Change the options as described below, and then click OK.

To return to standard sorting:

  1. Click the  upper-left corner of the table.

  2. In the PropertyManager, under Item Numbering, click Track Assembly Order .

Sort by

Select the name of a column and choose Ascending or Descending for the primary sorting.

Then by

Select the name of a column and choose Ascending or Descending for secondary sorting.

Then by

Select the name of a column and choose Ascending or Descending for tertiary sorting.

Group items

Assemblies, parts, other. Select one or more categories to sort the rows in that category. If you select multiple categories, sort them by selecting one of them and clicking Ascending or Descending. Other is a user-defined item (for example, oil or grease).

Item Numbering

Do not change the numbering of the items. Select this check box to keep the item numbering consistent with the configuration line.

Search for 'Bill of Materials - Sort' in the SOLIDWORKS Knowledge Base.

Sorry, my message may not have been very clear.

My problem does not concern the drawings, but the 3D files of an assembly for 3D export.

I think that "pilotassembly" from mycadtools can answer your problem but not using this module I can't give you the procedure to follow

With Smartbom Visiativ tool you should be able to retrieve the list of your parts by material in a simple and very fast way or otherwise with a sorting on a solution BOM in GT22.

If, on the other hand, you want to create a folder by material in each assembly, apart from the manual method, no knowledge of automatic method.

You export file by file or you export your assembly with only the stainless steel parts and then your other assembly with only the HDPE parts...

Without the need to use "third-party tools"...

by having the ASM open:

Tools / Component Selection / Advanced...

allows you to make a selection according to properties (example matter = xxx?)

Then once you have selected a desired set, do:

File / Save As / (choose a neutral 3D format: ACIS, IGES, STEP, etc...)

Type a file name (ASM xxx material A), validate

Then Solidworks will ask a new question:

All components / Only the selection?? (and then we will choose "the selection")

I export sub-assemblies, so assembly of several parts of the same material. I have to keep the origin of my different blends.

I managed to find a DIY method:

- You can search for components by material in the filter bar above the creation tree

- Selecting my filtered components in the graphical area

- Then copy/paste from my part set into a new assembly.
