Trouble importing large STEP file in SolidWorks – any tips?

Hi all,

I’m struggling to import a large STEP file (~500MB) into SolidWorks. Every time I try, the software either crashes or just hangs forever. I’ve tried different import settings (B-Rep, Graphics Body, etc.), but no luck so far.

My PC is pretty decent, so I don’t think it’s a hardware issue. Has anyone dealt with big STEP files like this? Any tricks to make the import smoother or tools to simplify the file beforehand?

Funny enough, while searching for answers, I even ended up down a rabbit hole reading what are deep learning models — definitely not helpful here, but interesting!

Would really appreciate any advice from those who’ve handled this before.

Indeed, importing large steps into solidworks can be very complicated.
Have you tried checking 3D Interconnect in the Solidworks import options?

This sometimes makes it easier to import large files (sometimes only!)

Otherwise for your information the category chosen does not correspond to your post (Solidworks would be more accurate):
