Trouble importing large STEP file in SolidWorks – any tips?

Hi all,

I’m struggling to import a large STEP file (~500MB) into SolidWorks. Every time I try, the software either crashes or just hangs forever. I’ve tried different import settings (B-Rep, Graphics Body, etc.), but no luck so far.

My PC is pretty decent, so I don’t think it’s a hardware issue. Has anyone dealt with big STEP files like this? Any tricks to make the import smoother or tools to simplify the file beforehand?

Funny enough, while searching for answers, I even ended up down a rabbit hole reading what are deep learning models — definitely not helpful here, but interesting!

Would really appreciate any advice from those who’ve handled this before.

Thanks!

Indeed, importing large steps into solidworks can be very complicated.
Have you tried checking 3D Interconnect in the Solidworks import options?

This sometimes makes it easier to import large files (sometimes only!)

Otherwise for your information the category chosen does not correspond to your post (Solidworks would be more accurate):

try with Freecad, I opened a 300MB step, with TPS but open and complete file

If you want I can try to open it and send it back to you

Technology is advancing quickly but sending the open file back to it does not seem possible to me at the moment

There are many ways, right?

Not to my knowledge, and by the way it works I don't see how it would be feasible. Opening/loading a file means that its contents are transferred to the computer's memory. What is opened by the machine cannot be loaded into the memory of the machine machine.

The only interest in opening it on a different computer is to test its integrity or to simplify/convert it. It can then be returned, corrected or simplified, but it will still have to be opened and loaded by the host, with more or less success.

Unchecking these check options does not seem impertinent to me to relieve loading:

In import/general:

Click OK to confirm these choices.

Reopen options, import/Step:

dixit: The only interest in opening it on a different computer is to test its integrity or to simplify/convert it. It can then be returned, corrected or simplified, but it will still have to be opened and loaded by the host, with more or less success.

Yes

@Sylk and yet on large step files it changes everything.
Impossible to open without the 3Dinterconnect option, it opens quite quickly with it.
On the other hand, the why? I have no idea!!!
Otherwise see this link with the same advice and other additional ones:

The only thing for sure if you can, favor the parasolid format (*.x_t)

I didn't say the opposite. You misunderstood me or I expressed myself badly, I'm just saying that unchecking the checks and diagnostics can only speed up the loading of steps.

I had indeed misunderstood!

I had corrected it in Solidworks but obviously someone insists that it be Autocad-electrical...

I imagine that the step comes from autocad so I put the 2 back so that tlm is happy.
